Consumer Guide to the Graco Stroller Recall

Your Graco Stroller Injury Law Firm - A Team You Can Trust

The need for products intended for use with infants and small children to be safe and free from defects is extreme. Parents place the very safety of their children in the hands of the makers of the products they use, and when something goes wrong with any of them, it can lead to terrible results.

That appears to be the case with several different models of Graco baby strollers. More than 1.5 million models of these strollers have been recalled because of reports of several serious injuries. Below you’ll find information regarding the products at issue, the dangers they cause and the injuries that have resulted, the solution that’s been offered by Graco, the models and unit numbers of the baby strollers that have been recalled and ultimately how you should proceed if your child has been injured by a defective Graco baby stroller.

Child Finger Injuries from Graco Strollers

Graco is one of the world’s leaders when it comes to products designed for use with infants and children. One of their most successful product lines is a series of different baby strollers that are designed to provide parents with mobility for their children and convenient solutions for the needs that typically arise in a typical infant’s day.

For instance, most Graco strollers feature sturdy frames that withstand heavy use, solid and comfortable seating compartments that allow the child to either sit up or lay down and sleep when the need arises, pockets that are large enough to carry necessary supplies such as bottles and diapers and a canopy that’s supposed to protect children from the elements. Unfortunately, one of these innovations in particular has led to several reports of serious injuries that are described below.

What is Defective about the Graco Strollers

The center of the issue involving the Graco baby stroller recall is one small part of several of their models. This part is a hinge that’s designed to allow parents to move the canopy portion of the stroller up or down. The hinge is not covered, and the reports of injuries have all dealt with contact by the children with this hinge while the canopy was being adjusted.

Specifically, there were seven reports of injuries filed that formed the basis of this massive Graco baby stroller recall. Two of these injury reports concerned severe lacerations of the children’s fingers when they touched this hinge while the canopy was being adjusted. However, there were also five reports of severed fingers that occurred while the same adjustments were taking place.

What Graco is Doing About the Defective Strollers

Graco reacted to this situation by initiating a recall with help from the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), but they also offered what they think is a solution to this issue in short order. This solution provides those who own the models in question to contact the company in order to obtain a free repair kit.

These repair kits are basically covers for the hinge on the canopy that would prevent direct contact between the child’s fingers and the moving part that’s led to the injuries described. However, some see this as no solution at all because it means that parents would be responsible for making these repairs. In addition, if a child is injured by a defective Graco baby stroller after the cover has been installed, it could lead to a defense by Graco that the cover was not installed properly if a lawsuit is filed on these grounds.

Defective Graco Stroller Model Numbers

When a recall involves 1.5 million units, it usually deals with several different models of that product. That is the case here, and anyone who owns a Graco stroller should look to the inside portion of the lower rear frame of the unit just above wheels to locate the model number. The model brand names affected by the Graco baby stroller recall include the Graco Passage, Alano and Spree Strollers. The model numbers appear below:
